Situated off the coasts of Turkey, Greece and Egypt, Cyprus is an island destination that benefits from its sunny Mediterranean position.  The country, split into a southern region known as the Republic of Cyprus and a northern region that calls itself the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, has an incredibly diverse cultural background that is evident in its architecture, cuisine and people.  The country's capital, Nicosia, is split like the surrounding nation in two by the famous 'Green Line' that is monitored by the United Nations.  Nicosia is home to the Hamam Omerye, a restored 14th century public bath.  Lanarca, another popular location on the island, has some of the best scuba diving sites in the world and is also known for its Church of St Lazarus.  Paphos, another tourist favourite, is the location of the Archaeological Park, the Tombs of the Kings, and the Paphos Fort.  Bellapais and St Hilarion Castle are also popular.

Because of Cyprus' unusual political status (with the northern region and southern region still somewhat at odds with one another), the means of getting to the island are somewhat limited.  Lanarca International Airport is the island's largest after the closure of Nicosia International, with Paphos International in the south also offering international connections.  Airlines that fly to Cyprus include British Airways, Cyprus Airways, Eurocypria Airways, Thomsonfly and easyJet.  Ferry connections to the island are irregular, though some cruise ships now visit.  Car hire is recommended for exploring the island, especially for visiting the more remote areas.  Rental companies such as Thrifty, Sixt, EasyTerra, Europcar and Budget are located on the island.
